Why you must alter your toothbrush after recuperating from Covid-19

Coronavirus infections are spreading  at an alarming rate, and it is now well evidenced that a person can be re-infected after having recovered once.

While vaccines have proven to be effective as a preventive measure, experts are of the view that even they can't guarantee 100 per cent protection in all situations, at all times.

Precaution thus becomes important, both, for those who have not contracted the disease yet and those who have recently recovered.

Dentists are of the view that a person who has recently recovered from Covid-19 should immediately change their toothbrush upon recovery. This, they say, not only protects the person from chances of re-infection but can also save others who use the same washroom in the house.

"If you or anyone in your family and friend circle have contracted Covid-19, once recovered, please ensure to change your toothbrush, tongue cleaner etc. These can harbour the virus, and it is best they are discarded," said Dr Pravesh Mehra,  Dental Surgery, Lady Hardinge Medical College, New Delhi.

Agreeing with this, Dr Bhumika Madan, Consultant (Dental), Aakash Healthcare Super Speciality Hospital, said she usually recommends changing toothbrush and tongue cleaners to anyone who has recovered from seasonal flu, cough and cold.

"We are advising the same to Covid-19 patients too. If you have contracted Covid-19, you should change your toothbrush and tongue cleaner after 20 days of getting the first symptoms," Dr Bhumika Madan said.

She explained that this is because bacteria/virus build-up over time on toothbrush is known to cause upper respiratory tract infections.

"As a prevention, we prescribe using mouthwash and betadine gargle that helps in reducing build-up of virus/bacteria in the mouth. If a mouthwash is not available, rinsing the mouth with warm saline water also works fine. Apart from this, one must maintain oral hygiene and brush twice a day," Dr Madan said.

The significance of oral hygiene and changing toothbrush and tongue cleaner after recovering from Covid-19 can be better understood once we understand how SARS-CoV-2, the virus causing Covid-19, spreads.

According to the World Health Organisation, the virus primarily spreads through tiny droplets that come out from an infected person's mouth when they cough, sneeze, shout, talk, laugh etc.

People may also get infected by touching surfaces that have been contaminated by the virus, and then touching their eyes, nose or mouth without cleaning their hands.

Apart from this, the virus has also been found to be airborne i.e. once released from an infected person, it can stay in the air for some time and get transmitted. The transmission would be faster in crowded places and places with poor ventilation.

In this backdrop, toothbrush and tongue cleaner of an infected person are likely to have a significant concentration of the virus. Continued use of the same products can result in re-infection and infect others.

If someone in your family has contracted Covid-19, it is also important NOT to keep toiletry items (toothbrush, tongue cleaner etc.) of the household together as it increases chances of transmission.

Experts also advise Covid-19 patients to dry and disinfect their toothbrush and tongue cleaner for safety.

BRAZILIAN STUDY ON COVID AND TOOTHBRUSH

In January this year, researchers in Brazil carried out a study to understand the impact of oral hygiene on Covid-19 transmission.

The study recommended that disinfecting toothbrushes should be part of oral hygiene as it would help in mitigating infections.

The study was published in the Journal of Infectious Diseases and stressed that toothbrushes can "act as reservoirs for microorganisms" that can easily spread the disease from the infected person to others.

why people put a frying pan with salt on the stove! Such a handy trick

Your frying pan could last much longer!

The invention of non-stick frying pans has helped many a household around the world. It saves a lot of irritation when you can actually bake pancakes without them sticking to the bottom of the pan. Yet that non-stick coating does wear down over time and then it’s back to caked on food in your pan. Many of us will probably throw out the pan in question, thinking it’s past its shelf life, and buy a new one, but that’s really a waste. This trick will save you from having to buy a new pan!

There’s no need to throw out your frying pan anymore!

Table salt

This trick is very simple and you already own the solution. You’ve probably got it waiting for you in a cupboard in your kitchen: it’s salt! All you need to do is cover the non-stick coating of the frying pan in question with a generous layer of table salt. Put the pan on the stove and heat it up until it’s nice and hot. Then, all that’s left to do is rinse off the salt and dry the pan. You’ll see that the food you prepare in your pan will stick much less quickly now!

Dishwashing

To prevent your non-stick coating from wearing away, you could decide to no longer clean your pan with dish soap. Dish soap will wear down that nice coating we all love and that’s exactly what you want to prevent from happening. Just use some hot water and a dishwashing brush and then dry the pan with a paper towel. This way, you’ll clean away the grease, but leave the non-stick coating intact!

Besides protecting the non-stick coating of your frying pan, salt can do much more for your cooking ware. Go on to the next page to read how to clean a burnt pan using salt.

Burnt pan

It happens to the best of us. The burner was on a tad too high or you got distracted by the phone or your child. Before you know it the kitchen starts to smell and fill with smoke. Your potatoes are looking rather black or that nice steak has turned into a piece of rubber. Your food can’t be saved, but there’s no reason to throw the pan away with it. There’s an easy trick to remove all the burnt bits from the pan.

Clean

To clean the burnt pan, all you need is some salt. Simply sprinkle a generous layer of salt in the burnt pan and add a little water to cover the bottom of the pan. Put the pan on low heat and let the water simmer for 15 minutes. Thanks to the boiling water and the salt, the burnt bits will loosen quickly. After 15 minutes you’ll be able to easily remove all the scorched bits without any elbow grease.

Fire

Besides protecting the pans non-stick coating or cleaning it, salt is great to have within arms reach during cooking. We certainly hope this won’t happen to you, but it could happen: a grease fire while you’re cooking. This type of fire can happen when you’ve got oil in your pan. Throwing water on oil is never a good idea, which is why you should always put the lid on the pan in case of a grease fire. Don’t have a lid nearby? Then grab your table salt. Pour this over the flames in the pan until they’ve been extinguished. The salt will get rid of the flames very quickly!
